Conducts orientation and training of new staff, assures competency of staff, and participates in quality assurance activities and peer review for ongoing education and development as appropriate. Input into policies and procedures as appropriate. Identifies areas for improvement to support optimal efficiency and operations.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Exhibits guiding behaviors that reflect Children's values and support our mission and vision.Monitors the daily workflow of the Coding and Revenue Integrity Unit to ensure work is completed according to the established deadlines to facilitate the flow of health information and the timely processing of patient billing.Demonstrates understanding and competence in various coding systems such as ICD-10-CM/PCS, ICD9-CM, CPT, HCPCS, etc.Acts as department subject matter resource for these coding systems.When work volumes dictate the need for lead support, assigns accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for all inpatients; assigns accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for observation, outpatient and ED patients, while ensuring compliance with Official Coding Guidelines and Ethical Coding standards along with State, Federal and Joint Commission standards.Abstracts required data for appropriate patient encounters in order to initiate and maintain a data base of selected information.Researches questions as they relate to coding and compliance and makes recommendations for coding policies and procedures to ensure consistency in coding of disease processes and procedures.Communicates with physicians and other clinicians concerning diagnoses and procedures when questions arise and/or when clarification is required, following hospital guidelines for the physician clarification process. Including appropriate and timely follow-up of queries as well as reviewing non-acknowledged Physician clarification for appropriateness and possible coding opportunity.Orients and trains new members to the Coding and Revenue Integrity Unit. Supports the training of new employees by answering questions and performing peer review as needed.Coordinates and/or performs internal and external coding audits when applicable.Attends educational seminars, reads pertinent health care literature and maintains credentials, in order to remain current in knowledge of standards and practice of medical coding.May work with Information Services to review, develop, and/or test current and new products or workflows to ensure they meet the needs of the coding unit.Assists in the development of processes and procedures to facilitate optimal operations within the Coding and Revenue Integrity Unit, department and health system.Assists the Coding and Documentation Integrity Supervisor/Director by making suggestions for improvement of the unit and overall HIM systems.Demonstrates the ability to address and/or refer conflict, staff or department issues to the coding supervisor.Identifies and recommends new items to the Coding Supervisor and Director that will provide additional education/coding guidance and increase coding efficiency.Participates in other projects as assigned by the Coding Supervisor or Director.Serves as the liaison with the Surgicenter, HOT Services, the Cardiac Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, Observation, Procedural Short Stay and Day Surgery when questions arise regarding outpatient surgical services.Researches questions as they relate to outpatient surgical coding and compliance and makes recommendations for coding policies and procedures to ensure consistency in coding of disease processes and procedures including monitoring the Manager Review WQ.Works in conjunction with the hospital coder to review and appeal audits.Monitors and reviews accounts in WQ 25 - Waiting for Information to determine when information is available so the coder can complete the coding of these accounts in a timely manner.Coordinates the preparation and execution of monthly sectional meetings when applicable to include minute taking, agenda preparation, coordinating guest speakers and researching of agenda items.This is a 100% remote position.Children's Wisconsin is an equal opportunity / affirmative action employer.
