NOTICE OF VACANCY Jackson Madison County School System Deadline: Until Filled TITLE: Systems Administrator REPORTS TO: Chief Information Officer TERM: 12 months JOB GOAL Responsible for the technical design, planning, provisioning, implementation, operation, maintenance, and the highest level of performance tuning and recovery procedures for mission-critical enterprise systems. Serves as a technical expert in system administration for complex operating systems. Recommends the redesign and configuration of operating systems and system applications. Investigates and analyzes feasibility of system requirements and develops system specifications. Identifies methods and solutions and provides project leadership and management to provide a high level of service to District employees. Participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. Ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related equipment are backed up and secured. Relies on knowledge and professional discretion to achieve goals. Significant ingenuity and flexibility are expected. QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING: S. degree in a technical or business-related field or five years of experience in computer networking or a technical field Excellent verbal, written, and customer relations skills; ability to apply logical and critical thinking when solving problems. Proficiency in: Programming languages and operating systems; current equipment and technologies in use; system administration, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, virtualization platforms, and system performance monitoring tools. Ability to plan, organize and document complex system design activities and to configure systems to be consistent with district policies/procedures; communicate technical/complex information both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperation, understanding, trust, and credibility; perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively. Preferred Certifications: A+ Certification, Network+ Certification, Security+ Certification, Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician, Cisco Certified Network Associate, Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, VMWare Certified Professional. Must maintain an operating telephone and furnish the number to his/her supervisor. A valid Tennessee Class "D" license The ability to use a computer keyboard effectively. The ability to communicate orally by phone or in person. The ability to move and transport computer equipment. The ability to see and read printed material. The ability to operate a standard-equipped company motor vehicle. FBI/TBI Fingerprint/Background Clearance every five (5) years Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent might find appropriate and acceptable. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of personnel. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage the day-to-day operations of the District infrastructure by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance, and repair. Ensure that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained. Apply revisions to host system firmware and software. Work with vendors to assist with support activities. Install new or rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc., in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements. Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures. Research and recommend innovative and automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage district resources and provide economies of scale. Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying the completion of scheduled jobs such as backups. Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions. Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media. Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary. Investigate and troubleshoot issues as well as provide Tier 3 support when necessary. Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted departments. Apply patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Add and configure new services as necessary. Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning. Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required. Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment. Interpret and/or discuss information with others that involves terminology or concepts not familiar to many people; regularly provide advice and recommend actions involving rather complex issues. May resolve problems within established practices. Provide occasional guidance, some of which are technical. Develop new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts, and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability. Train employees on how to use new software and hardware. Perform troubleshooting as required. As such, lead problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors, other support personnel, and/or organizations. Establish, maintain, and manage user account directory. Install, modify, and maintain systems and utility software on server computer systems. Provide server support related to other software. Ensure high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission-critical host computer resources. Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature, and user abuse. Develop procedures, programs, and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications. Develop and coordinate project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the district. Provide leadership in the planning and implementation of projects for computer operations and enterprise systems administration. Develop tools, procedures, and training sessions for Technology Department staff. Manage the data center and computer host systems, including hardware, software, and equipment such as air-conditioning systems, UPS (uninterrupted power system), and fire protection systems. Stay current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommend ways for the district to take advantage of new technology. Demonstrate commitment to and promotion of a culture of service excellence and continual improvement within the IT department. Apply security patches and updates to computer equipment on a frequent basis. Ensure routine preventative measures are performed on existing equipment and systems. Read trade publications and periodicals, attends seminars and meetings, and pursue additional training and certifications to stay abreast of the latest developments within the Information Technology field. Contribute to the support knowledge base on a regular basis. Remain accessible for "on-call" activities. Perform additional duties as requested. Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice.
