As a staff veterinarian with the Arizona Humane Society, you will not only help us achieve our vision to end animal suffering, homelessness and needless euthanasia, but you'll also be serving pets and people who may have nowhere else to turn. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In the hospital/clinic Evaluate owned animals brought in for examination. Perform physical exams, diagnostics, therapeutics and determine an appropriate treatment plan. Give clear recommendations, treatment plans and written post-op instructions to owners. Perform general surgery, spay/neuter, and comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment. Formulate, oversee, present, implement, review and update a humane euthanasia program. Examine and oversee treatment of injured or sick animals; provide accurate and precise instructions to the clinic technicians. This includes evaluation, treatment plan and alteration of kitten nursery animals, isolation animals, adoptable animals and protective custody animals; as well as stray and surrendered animals. Administrative Maintain all medical records in accordance with AAHA and AZ Veterinary Medicine Examining Board standards. Monitor, dispense and log controlled substances according to standards established by the DEA. Maintain active DEA license at facility address. Assist other departments in situations involving the welfare of the animals, such as testifying in court, appearing in media releases, providing necessary documentation regarding the health of the animals and other situations requiring medical expertise. Be available for "on-call" status for emergency situations and respond quickly. Advise Lead Veterinarian of clinic activities and recommend possible changes to upgrade the services and community impact. Work cooperatively with the Director of Veterinary Services to achieve clinic goals. Attend seminars to satisfy continuing education requirements for Arizona D.V.M. license renewal. QUALIFICATIONS: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine OR Veterinary Medical Doctor Degree and licensed to practice in Arizona. Two years of experience in veterinary practice with an emphasis on quality medicine and surgery. Must work well with others, treat coworkers with respect, and maintain a positive attitude for both internal colleagues and external customers. Must possess above average surgical and dental skills and a humane attitude towards animals and people. Orthopedic skills a plus. Must be able to evaluate health status in an objective manner and determine most appropriate disposition of an animal. Good communications skills. Language Skills: Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language helpful. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical skills. Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment), and Intravet. Experience with other practice management software helpful. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Driver's License. Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance is required. Access to reliable transportation. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment: There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; occasional wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander.
